Cycling adventure in Northern Norway!
Following in the cycling tracks of the Arctic Race; Tromsø, Senja, Andøya, Lofoten

In July/August/September every year we invite you on an amazing cycling holiday in Northern Norway! Cycling on 3 of the 18 Norwegian National Tourist Roads, it will be rugged, wild, beautiful and completely unique. We are convinced that this will be a very special bike ride, giving you experiences that will last a lifetime.

The trip starts in Tromsø and then continues on to Senja. We take the ferry over to Andenes and then cycle south to Lofoten.
The accommodation will include fisherman’s cabins and lovely hotels. There will be local food, very little traffic, lots of socialising, and, not least, a new cycling adventure to look forward to.

A bit about the trip

We fly to Tromsø where we will stay for the first night. From here, we cycle out to Kvaløya and all the way out to Sommarøy on lovely coastal roads. From Sommarøy, we take the ferry over to beautiful Senja.
We will mainly be following the coast all the way along Senja, Andøya and the northern part of Lofoten with the sea to the west and the majestic mountains to the east. We cycle close to these impressive mountains, but still on relatively flat terrain. During the trip, we take three ferries.
We actually cycle on 3 of the 18 National Tourist Roads in Norway. Stunningly beautiful scenery!

The daily stages are between 65–110km. We’re going to be cycling through some beautiful places including some classic northern Norwegian fishing towns such as Ersfjord, Gryllefjord, Hamn, Bleik, Svolvær, Kabelvåg and Henningsvær.
As always, we will have our support vehicle for assistance and to transport all our luggage.

The trip is rounded off with two nights in fantastic fisherman’s cabins at Skårungen outside Kabelvåg.
On the last day, we take a short ride to Henningsvær where we will then hike up to Festvågtind. At the summit, we’ll have a magical, panoramic, 360-degree view over Lofoten. BEAUTIFUL!!!

On the day of your departure, you take an airport bus to Evenes where there are great connections to all southern destinations.

You can choose whether you want to bring your own bike or if you want to hire one on site. You will find more information on prices for renting/transporting bikes further down the page.

  • Outstanding scenery with majestic mountains and endless sea.
  • Unique fishing communities you only find in Northern Norway.
  • Great roads. We will cycle on 3 of Norway’s 18 National Tourist Roads.
  • Lunch at the Fiskekrogen restaurant in Henningsvær.
  • Panoramic view from the top of Festvågtind.
  • Lovely hospitality and the outdoor hot tub at Skårungen, with a fantastic view over Vågakallen!

We will stay in hotels of a good standard. Some nights are spent in slightly bigger hotels such as the Ishavshotel in Tromsø, and some nights are spent in smaller places such as the fisherman’s cabins at Skårungen.
The arrangement is that we share double rooms. You will find more information about booking single rooms further down the page.

Infection control

In collaboration with our partners, we arrange our trips in accordance with the infection control advice from the Norwegian Institute of Public Health. In order for you to feel safe, we have made adjustments to our tours to ensure that we always comply with the advice from the authorities.
It is, of course, also important that you yourself take responsibility and follow the rules at all times, uphold social distancing, wash your hands, use antibacterial hand sanitiser, and wear a mask where necessary. You must bring your own antibacterial hand sanitiser.

Bike hire and transport

You can choose whether you want to hire a bike or bring your own.

We hire bikes from Tromsø Outdoor: Merida road racers equipped with Shimano 105. Bicycle rental fees come in addition to the price of the trip. The additional bicycle rental fee is 2,200NOK.
You pay this fee directly to Tromsø Outdoor when you pick up the bike.

If you want to bring your own bike, you have to book ‘bicycle shipping’ with your airline. The transportation fee for your bike is approx. 250NOK each way.

Bicycle insurance

Participants are responsible for taking out bicycle insurance for their own bike.

The programme is preliminary. Expa Travel reserves the right to make any changes to the programme during the trip. This trip is in the north, so be prepared for all kinds of weather!

Day 1Arrival day, Tromsø.

We expect you will book a flight with Norwegian or SAS to Tromsø. We meet up at Tromsø airport at 1.30pm.
There will be shared transport to the Ishavshotel in Tromsø. We will spend the afternoon putting the bikes together following the flight and you will have some time to yourself to discover Tromsø city.
For those who want to hire a bike: we’ll pick the bikes up from Tromsø Outdoor (walking distance from the hotel).
Welcome briefing and lovely dinner in the restaurant at the Ishavshotel.

Day 2Tromsø - Kvaløya - Sommarøy, approx. 75km

After a good breakfast, there will be a short briefing in reception at 9.30am.
Today’s goal is Sommarøy, an island that lies right at the mouth of the ocean. This stage is approx. 75 km. We cycle over the bridge to Kvaløy and follow the Grindøysund and the fjord all the way out to Sommarøy. A beautiful tour in flat terrain!
On Sommarøy, we will stay at the Sommarøy Arctic Hotel.
Dinner at the hotel.

Day 3Sommarøy - ferry to Botnhamn/Senja - Hamn, approx. 90km including ferry trip

An exciting day lies ahead. Today’s stage is on one of the 18 National Tourist Roads in Norway.
We start straight after breakfast. We cycle the first (approx.) 10km to the ferry that leaves from Brensholmen at 10.15am. The ferry takes approx. 45mins.
Once we reach Senja, we follow the fjord around Senjahopen and on to the world famous Ersfjord Beach. There, we can test out the EVEN more famous ‘Gulldassen’ toilet. 😀
When we get to Hamn we will have done approx. 1,500 metres of elevation. Possibly the trip’s most demanding day.

Check in at the beautiful “Hamn i Senja”, where we will stay in apartments (four and four). We’ll take some time to enjoy the surroundings before we sit down to a delicious dinner.

Day 4Hamn (Senja) - ferry to Andøya - Sortland, 10 + 110km

This is the tour’s longest day. It’s another day where parts of the trip are on one of the 18 National Tourist Roads.
The ferry from Gryllefjord to Andøya leaves at 11.00am, and takes approx. 1.5 hours. So we have time for a long, hearty breakfast before we leave.

When we get to Andenes (on Andøya) we’ll have some lunch before we continue the trip towards Sortland. On the way, we cycle in to various places, including the Bleik Beach. This experience, with the white beaches at Bleik, the surrounding mountain peaks, and the open turquoise sea, is bound to make a lasting impression.
From Andøya, we continue south towards Sortland. Here, we check-in at the completely new Scandic Hotel, right down at the edge of the pier. A very well-deserved dinner rounds off a long day.

Day 5Sortland - Melbu, approx. 42km or 82km

Today there are several route choices. The weather and how you’re feeling will determine your choice!
We think we’ll cycle around the west side of Langøya and Hadseløya. The route follows the coast all the way around the islands. Flat terrain in stunning, typically northern-Norwegian coastal landscape.
A lunch stop in Stokmarknes before we cycle the last part in to the little village of Melbu. Here, we check in at the Melbu Hotel for a bit of time to ourselves, a lovely dinner and a good night’s sleep.

Day 6Melbu - Delp - Straumnes - Svolvær - Kabelvåg, approx. 70km

After a good breakfast, we go down to the ferry, which departs at 9.50am. This is the last day that we’ll be cycling on one of the National Tourist Roads – simply beautiful.
We cycle along by the ocean, surrounded by steep mountains and chalk-white beaches. We pass the beach at Delph, and the tiny villages of Stranden and Straumnes before we come to Lofoten’s largest town, Svolvær.
A trip along the pier and a coffee stop are required before we set off on the final stretch to our base in Lofoten; Skårungen in Kabelvåg. We will stay here for two days.

Check in and relaxing – and possibly a quick dip in the hot-tub before dinner at Skårungen’s own restaurant.
There will also be a bit of time for some ‘afterbike’…

Day 7Kabelvåg - Festvågtind - Henningsvær - Kabelvåg, approx. 35km + summit trip to Festvågtind

We’ll pack a small backpack with extra clothes for the summit hike and set our course towards Henningsvær. A trip of approx. 18km. Just before Henningsvær, we’ll park the bikes and the trip will continue on foot (summit trip) all the way up to Festvågtind, 541 metres above sea level.

This can be a bit of a demanding trip with some simple climbing. You’ll be rewarded at the top – a spectacular view over Henningsvær, Vestvågøy and Stamsund! It’s worth every single step! Highly recommended!

If you would rather have some time to yourself in Henningsvær, you continue over the bridge into the town centre. Henningsvær really is a lovely place, and you should try to see the town’s spectacular football pitch.

For those of you who choose to do the summit trip, once we’re done, we’ll return to the bikes and cycle the last few kilometres over the bridge and in to Henningsvær for some sightseeing in the town centre. Wonderful lunch together at the Fiskekrogen restaurant.

An easy and enjoyable trip back to Skårungen again. The plan is to be back by early afternoon.
It’s a pleasure to end the day – and the trip – in the hot tub and sauna right out on Skårungen’s pier where they have their own spa!

‘Farewell-dinner’ in Skårungen’s Italian-inspired restaurant (run by an Italian couple).

Day 8Fishing trip, eagle safari, summit trip or shopping before the journey home

You have all morning and up to early afternoon to enjoy the surroundings.
Perhaps we can tempt you with a fishing trip? Or a new summit hike in the area?
What about a quick trip into Svolvær or Kabelvåg?
Or you could go on an exciting eagle safari on a rib boat in the Trollfjord? Or you can simple relax and enjoy Skårungen. There are lots of options – the choice is yours.

Any fees for the activities you choose to do on this day are not included in the price. It’s a good idea to book the activity beforehand. You can do this through Expa Travel.

The airport bus leaves at 4.00pm. Departure is at 8.00pm with both Norwegian and SAS.
