Brief info about the trip

Meet up at Haugastøl. The easiest way to get there is by car or by train to Haugastøl railway station. We can help you book transport from the station if you arrive by train.

You will be picked up by dog sled at Haugastøl and transported to Halne Fjellstugu, where you will spend the night. This is a traditional mountain lodge with good food and friendly hosts. After a day outdoors, it’s lovely to relax by the fire while the cook prepares a delicious dinner. You may also hear some interesting stories from the host and Geirmund, the “mountain man”.

Guests on this trip will encounter a true passion for, and enormous knowledge of dog sledding. This ensures a fantastic experience out in the mountains.
Our aim is to teach you to drive the dog sled on your own. You will be instructed by professional, local experts who will, of course, accompany you on the entire trip.

  • Hardangervidda National Park – the enchanting wilderness.
  • The hosts at Halne Fjellstugu mountain lodge.
  • Atmosphere around the dining table.
  • Experiences of dog sledding.
  • Your new four-legged friends...

You will stay at Halne Fjellstugu, in a lovely double room with comfortable beds. Each room has its own shower and toilet, as well as Wi-Fi. Open the window a crack, and sleep soundly in the fresh mountain air from Hardangervidda!

Infection control

Our trips are arranged with our collaborative partners in compliance with the infection control guidelines set by the Norwegian Institute of Public Health. To ensure that you to feel safe on your trip with us, we have made adjustments in accordance with the recommendations by government authorities.

The programme is preliminary, Expa Travel Norway reserves the right to make any changes throughout the trip. Weather conditions: we may have to change the order of the excursions if the weather dictates.

Day 1Warm-up excursion with the dog sled team.

You will be met at Haugastøl railway station by the dog sled driver and dog sled team at 12:30. Thorough instructions on how to drive your own sled. There will be two people per sled, so you will take turns driving a team of eager huskies into the kingdom of the wild reindeer.
This afternoon will be “limited to” 20 km, to help you become familiar with dog sled driving. The trip will start from Haugastøl and bring you across the plateau. Your luggage will be transported from the railway station to Halne Fjellstugu.

After a delicious dinner at Halne Fjellstugu, it’s time for some “dog talk” with the guides, as well as preparations for the next day’s expedition.

Day 2Round trip across “Norway's rooftop” – Hardangervidda.

The day begins with a hearty breakfast. Pack a lunch and enjoy the fresh mountain air before heading out to the dogs. After greeting the dogs, you will learn how to harness the dogs and set them up in a team.

Today, we will do a round trip across “Norway’s rooftop” – Hardangervidda. Beautiful broad expanses, as far as the eye can see. You will experience the different terrains from east to west, with flat plateaus to the east, and more hilly terrain in the west. The weather can be unpredictable. You may have perfect sunny days with cloudless skies as you sweep across the white plateau. But there may also be rough days with wind and snow. Regardless of the weather, this will be a unique experience you will not soon forget!

After an elegant dinner at Halne Fjellstugu, it’s time for some “dog talk” with the guides before we strap on snowshoes and hike to one of Hardangervidda’s hidden gems. This is Halnekollen. Tonight, we’re going on a light safari. The light is magical this time of year, and whether it’s a clear, starry sky or the snow is falling thick, we can promise you a wonderful experience. It is also possible to see the Northern Lights from Norway’s rooftop.

Day 3To Haugastøl.

After breakfast, we will pack a lunch for our new excursion. Today, you can just enjoy the dogs, the peace and quiet, and the surrounding nature. You have now become a true dog-sled driver and can relax while gliding across the snow. A balm for the soul!

Later in the afternoon, we arrive at Haugastøl, which is the final destination for this trip.
Once back at Haugastøl, you can take the train or drive home – many experiences richer!
