In June we invite you on a cycling tour many people have on their ‘bucket list’. The dramatic nature of Romsdalen is the perfect setting for adventure and unforgettable experiences, and it is so beautiful and spectacular that it will take your breath away. We will experience and live on small guesthouses and hotels. Hidden gems even Norwegian do not know exist.
The tour starts in Oslo with train to Dombås.
The first bikeday it continues down to the beautiful Åndalsnes. The following day, we will stay in Åndalsnes to do what is possibly Norway’s most spectacular hiking trip – Rampestreken! You can, of course, choose to go on a gondola to the top of the mountain, but we strongly recommend this spectacular walk. Either way, it will be an exciting and active day!
The fourth day we`ll be on the saddle and climb the epic Trollstigen, a lot of viewpoints that will give you memories for life. In the evening we want to bring you to a small secret spot with a lot of history and culture. Get ready for a beautiful place in Norwegian nature.
The next day we cycle further towards Geiranger, we will do a mandatory photo stop at the famous viewpoint “Ørnesvingene” (Eagle turn). At arrival in Geiranger we hike to a really unique waterfall. If you rather want to bike, you can decide to climb up to the viewpoint Dalsnibba. A demanding but legendary climb!
On the final day of cycling, we start with the ferry before we cycle to the Utne. To day we will bring you to a local farm. Away from the normal hotels and guest houses, and into a beautiful nature and an authentic Norwegian farm. With a ‘worldfamous’ swing with a specatular view.
We hope to experience everything Norway has to offer with you – both from the saddle and by foot.
There’ll be socialising, and great cycling and hiking experiences, all in absolutely unique natural surroundings.
A bus, or support vehicle, will follow us for the entire trip. This means that you can choose to take shorter distances than those laid out, although we hope that the whole group will be able to cycle each stage.
There’s a maximum of 14 participants on this trip, and we will do a lot of stops and enjoy the scenery.
The tour is dependent upon the approval of the Department of Foreign Affairs and the Norwegian Institute of Public Health.
Expa Travel is the technical organiser of the trip.
This tour starts at Dombås. The easiest way to get there is by train. The support vehicle will follow us from there on all stages of the trip, which are typically approx. 105km + 65km + 30km + 30 km.
This trip is supposed to be an experience where the most important things are the socialising and the stunning natural surroundings.
The accommodation, support vehicle, guide, and all meals are included in the price. Transport on your day of departure to Dombås is also included. All you have to do is arrange your own tickets from Ålesund to your next destination, as well as bring your own bike, cycling gear, and casual clothes for the evenings. Contact us if you need to hire a bike.
In collaboration with our partners, we arrange our trips in accordance with the infection control advice from the Norwegian Institute of Public Health. In order for you to feel safe, we have made adjustments to our tours to ensure that we always comply with the advice from the authorities.
It is, of course, also important that you yourself take responsibility and follow the rules at all times, uphold social distancing, wash your hands, use antibacterial hand sanitiser, and wear a mask where necessary. You must bring your own masks and antibacterial hand sanitiser.
As a participant, you should expect daily stages of approx. 100km and 1,000 metres of elevation.
When it comes to this sort of landscape and the gradient/number of kms involved, it is important that you have had some cycling experience before. But it’s also fine to stretch yourself towards a new goal.
There’s also a seat in the support vehicle if needed.
From experience, a bit of preparation will make the trip even better…
We have done this tour many times in the past. You can see a film from one of the trips from autumn 2020 here:
The first night we stay at Dombås hotell, then Grand Hotel Bellevue in Åndalsnes.
Third night we stay at charming Petrines guest house in Norddal.
Then beautiful Hotell Utsikten in Geiranger and the authentic farm Christian Gaard the last night.
Christian Gaard is more like a farm than a hotel. Simpler standard with shared bathroom. But the view and the nature is magical, this is the real Norway as it has been for many centuries. Snowcapped mountains, beautiful fjords and waterfalls. And this is where you will find the ‘world-famous’ swing – a favorite motive for tourists from home and abroad. A unique place!
All meals: breakfast, lunch and dinner are included in this tour. From lunch in Dombås on the first day, up to and including dinner on the last day.
On some days, you make a packed lunch yourself at breakfast. This will be stored in the support vehicle!
We will enjoy dinner at the restaurants in the hotels.
Drinks with dinner are not included.
All participants must bring their own bike, water bottle and helmet.
Participants are responsible for their own bikes during the tour, regarding both damage and theft.
It’s important to bring your own repair kit with an extra inner tube…etc.
Participants are responsible for taking out their own insurance for their bike.
The programme is preliminary and subject to changes.
Meet up at Oslo sentral station at 1330 with bike and luggage.
The bicycle and luggage is transported by care, while you get on the train to Dombås. The train ride takes about 4 hours and travels through lush landscape. All you need is a backpack with snacks and drinks for the train ride.
Once we arrive Dombås we walk 15 minutes to the hotel, your luggage and bikes are waiting for you there. After check-in we eat dinner together in the hotel bufeet restaurant. Before we get ready for tomorrow´s bike ride.
The first half of the trip is on flat terrain. We cycle through forest before we get the mountain ridge up on both sides. The second half is mostly downhill to Åndalsnes. We can expect quite a bit of traffic.
We will pass Trollveggen today, Europe´s highest vertical cliff. 1700 meters straight up and the mountains massif hangs out, powerful!
Check in at the hotel in Åndalsnes before late lunch. Today we will do one of the most spectacular hiking tour in Norway.
We walk straight from the hotel towards Rampestreken. A trip of about 2,5 hours in total. It is straight up, and straight down. About 400 altitude meters. Rampestreken is 20 meter long and breaks into the open air. From the view point you can see Isfjorden, Åndalsnes and a mountain range. Beautiful!
If you would like to do a shorter trip, but with an equally as dramatic view, do a trip I the gondola.A lift that takes you up to the top of the mountain, with a spectacular view.
Everyone meets up in the hotel restaurant for dinner in the evening.
Cycling stage: approx 105 km and approx 400 meters of elevation.
This is the day where we clock up the mileage on metres of elevation because we will be climbing the spectacular Trollstigen!
We’ll be in the saddle for a few kilometres before the climb to the top begins. And, as always, we expect to be rewarded by the view (in good weather) and the sense of achievement you feel when you reach the top. It is possible to buy coffee and snacks at the top.
From the top, it’s downhill to Valldal. On the way, we stop at the waterfalls in the Gudbrandsjuvet ravine. Before lunch, there is a quick ferry trip over Storfjorden to Eidsdal.
Then we head towards Petrines Guesthouse for late lunch and check in. After lunch we will be transported up to an old cultural farm. There is still a farm operation there and possible to taste local food. The scenery around has mountains, waterfalls, and a glacier. A place you will never forget!
Back at the guest house we enjoy dinner and good conversations.
Cycling stage: approx 65 km and approx 900 meters of elevation.
After breakfast we head up to the famous viewpoint, Ørnesvingene, where you can look down over Geiranger and out beyond the Geirangerfjord! That’s a madatory photo stop! Geirangerfjord is one of UNESCO´s world heritage sites.
Then it is downhill all the way down to Geiranger, where we check in at the Hotel Utsikten.
After lunch you can decide whether you want to hike or bike. The hike takes about 3-4 hours with a coffee stop, and the destination is a waterfall that offers many surprises.
Or you can climb approx. 1,500 metres all the way up to Dalsnibba, the longest climb in Norway. Fantastic scenery all the way!
The day is rounded off with a delicious dinner in the hotel restaurant!
Cycling stage: approx. 30km and approx. 600 metres of elevation.
+ Dalsnibba: approx. 20km and approx. 1500 metres of elevation.
The day starts relatively early with a good breakfast buffet at the hotel. Then we’ll pack up the support vehicle before we walk onto the ferry in Geiranger.
On this trip though the Geirangerfjord it is mandatory to be outside if the weather allows. The boat goes through high mountains, mighty waterfalls, and snow on the mountains. A fjord that takes your breath away!
The ferry arrives Hellesylt and we get be on the saddle for a few kilometer to the end of the road. We are going to a place where no one would think anyone could live. It is only possible to get here with a boat.
We get a transport by boat in Hjørundfjorden to the farm Christian gaard. It is simple standard with shared bathrooms. But the view and the nature is magical, and
This is the real Norway as it has been for many centuries. Smowcapped mountains, beautiful fjords, and waterfalls. This Is unique!
At Christian gaard, we get changed and have a good lunch. Those who want join for a hike in the area or just enjoy a beer in the local pub with view towards the mountains.
The day is rounded off with farewell dinner .
