Tour de Trollstigen and Romsdalseggen
Tour de Trollstigen/Geiranger/Romsdalseggen – a cycling experience (and hike over Romsdalseggen) to remember!

In August we invite you once again on a cycling tour many people have on their ‘bucket list’. The dramatic nature of Romsdalen is the perfect setting for adventure and unforgettable experiences, and it is so beautiful and spectacular that it will take your breath away.

The tour starts at Dombås and continues down to the beautiful Åndalsnes. The following day, we will stay in Åndalsnes to do what is possibly Norway’s most spectacular hiking trip – Romsdalseggen and Rampestreken! You can, of course, choose to cycle that day too, but we strongly recommend this spectacular walk. Alternatively, you can cycle half the day and go up to Rampestreken in the afternoon. Either way, it will be an exciting and active day!

On the final day, we cycle from Geiranger to Lom through fantastic scenery.
For the super fit, there’s also a chance to climb up to the top of Dalsnibba, 1,500 metres above sea level. A demanding but legendary climb.

We hope to experience everything Norway has to offer with you – both from the saddle and by foot along Romsdalseggen.
There’ll be socialising, and great cycling and hiking experiences, all in absolutely unique natural surroundings.

A bus, or support vehicle, will follow us for the entire trip. This means that you can choose to take shorter distances than those laid out, although we hope that the whole group will be able to cycle each stage.
There’s a maximum of 20 participants on this trip, and we split up into smaller groups along the way, according to both fitness levels and traffic.

The tour is dependent upon the approval of the Department of Foreign Affairs and the Norwegian Institute of Public Health.
Expa Travel is the technical organiser of the trip.

A bit about the trip

This tour starts at Dombås. The easiest way to get there is by train. The support vehicle will follow us from there on all stages of the trip, which are typically approx. 100km + 90km + 80km.
Day 1 is on relatively flat terrain with a lot of downhills.
On Day 2, you choose whether you would like to do Norway’s most spectacular hiking trip – Romsdalseggen. On this tour we pass Rampestreken at the end of the trip. This is a day trip of around 6 hours.
You can also choose to only go up to Rampestreken, (approx 2.5hrs), relatively straight up and back down again, so it’s demanding enough.
If you would rather cycle on this day, it is fine to cycle on your own around the fjord towards Ersfjord. A super tour!
On Days 3 and 4 you can expect approx. 1,500 metres of elevation per day on your bike.

Description of the tour:
  • Day 1:
Make your own way to the starting point at Dombås.
Cycle from Dombås – Åndalsnes, approx. 100km. Overnight stay at the Grand Hotel Bellevue, Åndalsnes.
  • Day 2:
Hike to Romsdalseggen/Rampestreken or cycling trip. Overnight stay at the Grand Hotel Bellevue, Åndalsnes.
  • Day 3:
Cycle from Åndalsnes – Trollstigen – (Linge ferry terminal) – Geiranger, approx. 90km/1,600 metres of elevation.
Overnight stay at the Hotel Union, Geiranger.
  • Day 4:
Cycle from Geiranger – Dalsnibba – Lom, approx. 80km. Transport to Otta to take the train.

This trip is supposed to be an experience where the most important things are the socialising and the stunning natural surroundings.

For the first two nights, we will stay at the Grand Hotel Bellevue in Åndalsnes, the third night is spent at the beautiful Hotel Union in Geiranger.

As we are cycling from Thursday to Sunday afternoon, and because in August there will probably still be quite a few tourists on holiday, we can expect quite a bit of traffic. We will probably split up into smaller groups to avoid creating a traffic bottleneck on the roads and so that you can cycle at your own pace.

The accommodation, support vehicle, guide, and all meals are included in the price. Transport on your day of departure from Lom to the station in Otta is also included. All you have to do is arrange your own train tickets to Dombås/from Otta, as well as bring your own bike, cycling gear, and casual clothes for the evenings.

Expectations of you as a participant:
  • You cycle on a road racing bike or a hybrid bike/electric bike.
  • You are familiar with the gradient and length of each stage.
  • You are comfortable cycling on heavily trafficated roads.
  • You are prepared for cycling in all weathers, both physically and in terms of equipment (we’re hoping for good weather :-D).
  • You enjoy being out, seeing nature and experiencing life from the saddle.
Infection control on our tours

In collaboration with our partners, we arrange our trips in accordance with the infection control advice from the Norwegian Institute of Public Health. In order for you to feel safe, we have made adjustments to our tours to ensure that we always comply with the advice from the authorities.
It is, of course, also important that you yourself take responsibility and follow the rules at all times, uphold social distancing, wash your hands, use antibacterial hand sanitiser, and wear a mask where necessary. You must bring your own masks and antibacterial hand sanitiser.

Who is the trip for?

As a participant, you should expect daily stages of approx. 100km and 1,500-1,600 metres of elevation.
When it comes to this sort of landscape and the gradient/number of kms involved, it is important that you have had some cycling experience before. But it’s also fine to stretch yourself towards a new goal.
There’s also a seat in the support vehicle if needed.
We will probably split up into groups according to fitness level. From experience, a bit of preparation will make the trip even better…

Programme

Day 1Meet up in Dombås. Lunch before we start cycling from Dombås - Åndalsnes

Meet up at Dombås at 12.30pm.
In Dombås we will have a simple lunch together before we start cycling to Åndalsnes.
We will cycle in smaller groups. The first half of the trip is on flat terrain. The second half is mostly downhill. We can expect quite a bit of traffic.
Check in at the hotel in Åndalsnes. Refreshing shower and a bit of time for sightseeing on your own in Åndalsnes. Well-deserved dinner for everyone in the hotel restaurant.

Cycling stage: approx. 100km and approx. 400 metres of elevation.

Day 2Romsdalseggen & Rampestreken/or cycling trip on your own

Today we will do the most spectacular hiking tour in Norway. We’ll take the bus from Åndalsnes to Vengedalssetra, a journey of approx. 20mins.
The hike, which starts from the car park, takes approx. 5-7hrs. It’s uphill right from the start, all the way up to the ridge. On a clear day, we recommend that you make a little extra trip up from the ridge to Blånebba; 360 degrees of breathtaking view.
From the top we follow Romsdalseggen towards Åndalsnes, and with just 1.5kms to go, we come to Rampestreken, which is an absolute must photo spot!😃
The trip back down to Åndalsnes, from the top and past Rampestreken, can be demanding so we recommend you take your time.
You can have your packed lunch from the hotel on the way.

If you would like to do a shorter trip, but with an equally as dramatic view, walk from the hotel directly up to Rampestreken. This takes approx. 2.5hrs in total. It goes straight up and straight down, approx. 400 metres of elevation.
The ramp is 20m long and sticks out 8m in mid-air, hanging several metres above ground level. From the viewpoint, you can see the Isfjord, Åndalsnes and towering rock formations. BEAUTIFUL!

If you also want to cycle on this day too, we recommend the route around Isfjorden towards Eresfjord. And there’s some nice climbing in Vistdal…

It’s perfectly fine to enjoy the day and relax in lovely Åndalsnes.

Everyone meets up in the hotel restaurant for dinner at 7.30pm.

Day 3Åndalsnes - Trollstigen - Geiranger

This is the day where we clock up the mileage on metres of elevation because we will be climbing Trollstigen!
We’ll be in the saddle for a few kilometres before the climb to the top begins. And, as always, we expect to be rewarded by the view (in good weather) and the sense of achievement you feel when you reach the top.
From the top, it’s downhill to Valldal. On the way, we stop at the waterfalls in the Gudbrandsjuvet ravine.

After lunch, there is a quick ferry trip over Storfjorden to Eidsdal. Then we head up to the famous viewpoint, Ørnesvingene, where you can look down over Geiranger and out beyond the Geirangerfjord! That’s a madatory photo stop!
Then it is downhill all the way down to Geiranger, where we will stay at the Hotel Union.

The day is rounded off with a delicious dinner in the hotel restaurant!

Cycling stage: approx. 90km and approx. 1,600 metres of elevation.

Day 4Geiranger - Lom

The day starts relatively early with a good breakfast buffet at the hotel. Then we’ll pack up the support vehicle before we start cycling uphill for around 20 kilometres!!! Here, we’ll climb approx. 1,500 metres all the way up to Dalsnibba, before cycling the rest of this stage, which is mainly downhill all the way to Lom. Fantastic scenery all the way!
NB! You can decide whether you want to climb all the way up to the viewpoint at Dalsnibba, or if you’d rather ride in the support vehicle.

At Lom, we get changed and have a good dinner – pizza. Then we get on the bus, filled with lasting memories, tired legs and lots of amazing experiences. We might have a snooze on the way to Otta…..

Cycling stage: approx. 80km and 1,500 metres of elevation.
