Around the Hardanger Fjord – by bike
A cycling experience to remember!

In May, June, August and September we invite you to take part in a new and exciting cycling experience. This time, we’ll take you on a cycling tour around the idyllic Hardanger Fjord!
Hardanger is possibly Western Norway’s most beautiful, lush and fertile fjord landscape.

If you come in May or June, we’ll hopefully experience the blossom when the hillsides are white and pink with flowering fruit trees. One of spring’s most beautiful adventures.
If you decide to come in August or September, the same hillsides are full of colourful fruit and we’ll HAVE TO try some of the juicy, sun-ripened apples…
We cycle along the famous fjord for three days, on roads with very little traffic and in natural surroundings where the fjord and the mountains compete for your attention.

Start in Eidfjord

We start and end the tour at Eidfjord. The best way to get to the starting place in Eidfjord is by driving there yourself. There are plenty of parking spaces.

This is a trip that most regular cyclists can do, but we have allowed for extra challenges for the fittest. We’ll do this by splitting up into two groups!

Once again, we hope that we will experience some of the best that Norway has to offer – from the saddle.
As usual, there will be a great social atmosphere, amazing cycling experiences, home-made local food, old and new friends, but perhaps best of all, fantastic Norwegian scenery.

Support vehicle

We will have a support vehicle with us the whole way. In other words, you have the chance to take shorter routes than those we have set up, although we hope everyone will be able to take part in each stage.

We will split up into two groups according to each participant’s physical fitness but also in case there is a lot of traffic.

For the trip to go ahead, it must be approved by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs/The Norwegian Institute of Public Health (NIPH).

A bit about the trip

You make your own way to the starting point in Eidfjord. The tour also ends here.

On the first day, we cycle on relatively flat terrain before we finish for the day by taking a ferry over to Utne.
On the second day, we cycle along the fjord, passing many of Hardanger’s idyllic apple orchards. The terrain is hilly without any major climbs but it’s still challenging enough in terms of length and metres of altitude.
On the third day, we head towards Ulvik, it’s a bit of an uphill ride before we have a fantastic descent with a magical panoramic view on the way down to the fjord. At the bottom, we will have a coffee and ice cream break!
We then follow the fjord all the way back to the Hardanger bridge and further towards Eidfjord – then we will have cycled around the entire fjord.

We cycle a minimum of 50km on the first day, approx. 115km on the second day, and around 60km on the last day.
We have a support vehicle for luggage and it has a few extra seats for anyone who would like a lift at any point on the trip.

This will be a tour rich in memorable experiences and fantastic scenery. Socialising is also an important part of the trip.
We will stay in Utne and Granvin in lovely, family run Hardanger hotels. On the last day, we have dinner together in Eidfjord before we get changed and make our own way home.

Luggage transport, support vehicle, accommodation and all meals are included in the price.
You bring your own bike, cycling clothes and casual clothes for evenings. Please refer to the recommended packing list further down the page.

Programme

Day 1Start at Eidfjord

We meet at the pier in Eidfjord. There are plenty of good parking spaces here.
We begin with a bit of sightseeing and a light lunch. There will be a briefing and we’ll load the luggage onto the support vehicle before we get on our bikes.

We split up into two groups. The first part of the tour is mainly downhill towards Eidfjord. After that it gets a bit hillier along the fjord. Most of it is on good cycling roads in fantastic scenery. At Kinsarvik we take the ferry for a short trip (20mins) over to Utne.

Cycle stage: approx. 50km.

Day 2Utne - Jondalen - Tørvikbygd - Norheimsud - Granvin

There are lots of kilometres today! We take the idyllic road between the apple orchards along the Hardanger Fjord. Fun, beautiful and hilly roads all the way to Jondal. Here we take a break on the ferry over to Tørvikbygd – where we continue all the way to Granvin. We have to expect a bit more traffic on this side of the fjord as this is the tourist road to Voss.
We pass lots of lovely places on the way!

Our route follows the fjord all the way around, and we’ll be surrounded by mighty mountains, the beautiful fjord and apple orchards.
In Granvin we’ll have some “afterbike” before showering and changing for a well-deserved dinner.

Cycle stage: approx. 115km and approx. 1,000 metres of elevation.

Day 3Granvin - Ulvik - Eidsfjord

The day begins relatively early with a good breakfast at the hotel. After breakfast, we will load the luggage into the support vehicle before we return to our bikes. There’s a bit more of a climb over the mountain on the old road to Ulvik.
It’s beautiful wheeling down small roads towards the fjord again – for a coffee break at the pier. From here, we follow the fjord towards the famous Hardanger bridge and onwards back to Eidfjord. We have now cycled around the whole fjord. Fantastic scenery the whole way!

There will be a final dinner together in Eidfjord before we make our way home after three exciting days.

Cycle stage: approx. 60km and approx. 1,500 metres of elevation.

Help us to help others

One of the organisations close to our heart is “SuperSelma” – a Norwegian organisation that supports children with cancer and their families. Every year, SuperSelma organises various activities that they call Glimmers of Light – a respite in the everyday lives of cancer patients and their families. It’s a fantastic organisation that we are proud to support.
Read more here www.superselma.no.
We organise our own SuperSelma cycling trip in Spain every year, and the proceeds from the trip go directly to SuperSelma.
