A taste of Jotunheimen
Jotunheimen offers a stunning landscape with iridescent green lakes and sharp mountain peaks. We have put together a trip to give you a taste of the best Jotunheimen has to offer. The trip starts at Bessheim high up in the mountains, and continues to Knutshøe and Heimdalshøe. These are hidden gems that are easily accessible to hikers who want to see more of the Norwegian mountains. Knutshøe is known as “Besseggen’s little brother”, and has equally lovely views. We will be hiking at a comfortable pace, with plenty of breaks, so that we can enjoy Jotunheimen, with its steep mountainsides and glacial ponds.
This weekend, we will enjoy the beautiful mountain landscape and fresh mountain air, and gain a sense of accomplishment.
The trip is suited for anyone who enjoys hiking and who wants to challenge both their bodies and minds.
Jotunheimen National Park offers Norwegian mountain nature at its best. We have chosen the cosy Bessheim Fjellstugu mountain lodge as our accommodation, located in the midst of the beautiful Jotunheimen region. With its friendly hosts and delicious locally sourced food, this is a perfect starting point for our selected hikes. Everyone will be able to reach a peak. You don’t need to be athletic, but you must like to challenge yourself. The hike on Saturday will involve some climbing, but the hiking guide will assist with a good choice of paths. And the rewards at the top is amazing.
We expect each day hike to take about 4 to 6 hours. We will hike at a comfortable pace, but this will be a chance to challenge yourself. If there are significantly different levels of skill in the group, we will divide into two smaller groups, based on participants’ experience and abilities. We always try to travel by muscle power alone, as far as possible, to reduce the impact on the environment.
An important part of the experience is, of course, the local food. The three-course dinner in the evening is always the highlight. The hikes, meals, and opportunity for socialising will give you memories to last a lifetime!
You must arrange for your own transport to and from Bessheim. Contact us if you need help with transportation.
Bessheim Fjellstue is located along the road across Valdresflya. A good starting point for fantastic mountain hikes in the area. The hosts of the mountain lodge are warm and friendly.
Rooms maintain a good standard, with private baths (shower/toilet). We will stay in double rooms, but it is also possible to book single rooms or a family room at an additional price.
There is plenty of parking by the hotel.
In collaboration with our partners, we arrange our trips in accordance with the infection control advice from the Norwegian Institute of Public Health. In order for you to feel safe, we have made adjustments to our tours to ensure that we always comply with the advice from the authorities.
It is, of course, also important that you yourself take responsibility and follow the rules at all times, uphold social distancing, wash your hands, use antibacterial hand sanitiser, and wear a mask where necessary. You must bring your own masks and antibacterial hand sanitiser.
All meals are included in the price according to the programme. Guests make their own lunches at breakfast for our excursions.
The daily programme is preliminary. Expa Travel reserves the right to make any changes along the way. Weather conditions: we may change the order of the excursions due to the weather.
We meet up at Bessheim Fjellstue mountain lodge, where the Expa tour guide will greet you at the reception desk.
For dinner, we will be served locally sourced food from Jotunheimen. Bessheim is known for its delicious meals.
After dinner, we will gather to talk about the next day.
After breakfast and coffee, we will prepare for our hike.
Our goal for the day is Knutshøe, known as Besseggen’s little brother. This lovely route across the ridge of Knutshøe is one of the best hikes in the Gjende region. The characteristic mountain ridge is easily accessible from the road across Valdresflye and Gjendesheim. We will hike along the ridge, past steep mountainsides, surrounded by majestic mountains such as Bukkehåmåren, Besshøe and Surtningssue, as well as the more well-known Besseggen.
Our tour guide will lead us to the top. There are certain steep sections where we will have to climb. From the top of Knutshøe, there is a stunning view of the inner regions of Jotunheimen. The hike will take about 4 to 5 hours up and down. Upon our return to Bessheim, we can relax and enjoy the sun, and talk about the day’s accomplishment.
For dinner, we will be served a five-course meal, as well as wine from the local importers Bertil og Martens, for those who wish. Our host, Bjørn, will entertain us with tastes of Italian and French wines, as well as samples of local foods from Jotunheimen.
We will pack a lunch and relax after breakfast with a coffee before heading out on our hike.
Today, we will be hiking up to a peak with a view of Bygdin and Jotunheimen. The massif of Heimdalshøe is often ignored in favour of more well-known hiking destinations. With its magnificent views of Jotunheimen, this destination is well worth the hike. There is a steady climb the entire way, so remember to turn around and look at the view as you get higher!
The entire route is lovely, so we’ll enjoy the hike and take plenty of small breaks along the way.
The hike will take about 4 to 5 hours up and down.
We will eat lunch at a suitable spot and take in some fresh mountain air before returning home.
