Active days in spectacular Lofoten
Experience Lofoten’s fishing cabins, fishing, mountain and cycling trips!

We will, of course, continue to offer our popular Lofoten tours. The feedback from previous tours has been fantastic.

Lofoten has so much to offer. Genuine experiences in nature, mountain hikes with fantastic views, fishing trips with an (almost) guaranteed catch, cycling trips in spectacular scenery, wonderful food and lovely hosts. In short, everything you need for a memorable holiday.

On this trip, you will stay with hosts Christer & Tilla at Skårungen, in modern, well-equipped fishing cabins, right down at the water’s edge. There probably couldn’t be a better base camp for an activity holiday in Lofoten.
Together with the local guides, the host couple takes you on some of the trips that made them decide to settle down and run Skårungen in Ørsvågvær, just outside Kabelvåg.

Excursions, fishing, cycling and midnight sun

During the stay, there will be excursions to surrounding mountain peaks such as Tjeldbergtinden and Matmora, fishing, and cycling to Henningsvær with a summit trip to Festvågtind, which is 541 metres above sea level.
We expect to see the midnight sun, or at least the sunset at sea – an amazing experience. The subsequent stop at Rolf’s bar can also be an unforgettable experience!

You will have your own bike all week – which gives you the opportunity to go on your own excursions to e.g. the Lofoten Aquarium, the Lofoten Cathedral or the pier in beautiful Kabelvåg. Or you could go sightseeing or shopping in the slightly larger town of Svolvær. Both Kabelvåg and Svolvær are a short bike ride from Skårungen. You can take the initiative and do these activities yourself. Feel free to Google the places before you leave so that you are well prepared:-D

If you would like to do more during your stay, we can recommend a kayak course, renting an SUP paddle board, or you could have an exhilerating excursion on a rib boat. These activities can be booked at reception at Skårungen on arrival.

The trip runs over six days and in 2021 you can choose between 7 departure dates. You might want to extend your stay for a few extra days. In which case, we can recommend a few days in Moskenesøya, where you can experience a trip to Ryten, see the beautiful beaches of Kvalvika, Ramberg or Hauklandstranda, or visit the lovely little fishing communities of Nussfjord and Sakrisøy.

A bit about the trip

This trip is for you if you enjoy an active and eventful holiday. You certainly don’t have to be in top condition, but you probably like to challenge yourself. If you are in reasonably good shape, you will be able to complete all the walking and cycling trips we have planned for this trip in spectacular Lofoten.
The terrain is hilly, both uphill and downhill, and requires good, worn-in hiking shoes. You can expect some unique nature experiences!

You will also get to try your luck at fishing – which will be from a boat.

The excursions take approx. 4-6 hours, so every day you will have a few hours on your own before dinner.

You cycle to the starting points for the hikes – these bike rides are approx. 4-18km.
Some electric bikes are also available at Skårungen, for a small additional fee, should you wish to use them. If you would like to hire an electric bike, please contact us at info@expa.no for more information.

Welcome to Skårungen, Lofoten, Norway
The lovely hosts at Skårungen, Tilla & Christer / Foto: @stineogjarlen

Skårungen’s wonderful hosts Tilla & Christer are an important part of the experience. Their guidance is invaluable and they have lots of local knowledge and the odd tale to tell…

Skårungen also serves wonderful food, made with as many local ingredients as possible.

Infection control on our tours

In collaboration with our partners, we arrange our trips in accordance with the infection control advice from the Norwegian Institute of Public Health. In order for you to feel safe, we have made adjustments to our tours to ensure that we always comply with the advice from the authorities.

How to get to Lofoten

Flights

You book your flights yourself. We recommend the following three routes to fly to Svolvær:
  • Oslo – Evenes with Norwegian. There is an airport bus from Evenes to Kabelvåg (approx. 2.5 hours).
  • Oslo – Bodø, and then Bodø – Solvær by speedboat. Taxi/bus to Skårungen.
  • Oslo – Bodø, and then fly with Widerøe from Bodø to Svolvær. Taxi/bus to Skårungen.

If you take the airport bus from Evenes, you get off at Sandvikakrysset (the last stop, about 3mins from the centre of Kabelvåg).

The address for Skårungen is Ørsvågveien 40, 8310 Kabelvåg.

Programme

The programme is preliminary. Expa Travel reserves the right to make any changes to the programme during the trip.
Weather conditions: we may change the sequence of the excursions depending on the weather. Some excursions may be removed from the programme if the weather dictates. But we will offer alternatives:-)

Day 1Arrival day, Lofoten

Flight to Evenes (or Svolvær) and then airport bus to Skårungen in Kabelvåg (make your own way there).
Host couple Tilla & Christer and their team take you on a short walk to get to know the area around Ørsvågvær.

Settling in to accommodation at the fishing cabins (and possibly a dip in the sea or the hot tub?) before dinner.

The day ends with a long-awaited dinner together.

Day 2Hiking trip to Tjeldbergtinden, 367 metres above sea level. Approx. 4 hours

After a good breakfast, there will be a short briefing in reception at 9.30am. The day’s goal is Tjeldbergtinden. A “summit trip” which takes approx. 1.5 hours to the top.

It’s a 5km bike ride to the start point for the hike. The amount of kms cycling depends on which path you decide to take to climb to the peak. It will probably be the medium one, in terms of difficulty.

At the top, you’re rewarded with a beautiful view over Skrova, Kabelvåg and Svolvær. A perfect place to enjoy a Lofoten beer and some dry fish.
With a view like this, it’s easy to understand why Lofoten’s nature experiences are world renowned.
Arriving back at Skårungen you will have the afternoon free to explore on your own. Maybe you’d like to cycle in to Kabelvåg’s square or to the pier? Or perhaps the Lofoten Aquarium, or the Lofoten Cathedral? Or sightseeing or shopping in the slightly bigger town of Svolvær.
Both towns are a short bike ride from Skårungen. You can find out more about these places on the Internet.

A well-deserved dinner for all is served at 7pm.

Day 3Lofoten fishing! Fishing trip, approx. 4 hours

Today you will be fishing from a boat! There are few places in the world that are as well-known for their fish as Lofoten.

After breakfast, there will be a safety briefing and the equipment will be loaded before you board the boat that will take you out to sea. There is something very special about getting this close to nature and experiencing the water.
The weather will dictate the route and how many hours you will be at sea. The plan is to be back at Skårungen by lunchtime.

The afternoon is free for you to do your own activities. If the weather is good, we recommend a kayaking course. You can book this at reception.

The day ends with a good dinner for everyone at Skårungen.

Day 4Full day hiking trip to Matmora, 788 metres above sea level, and midnight sun/sunset

After a long breakfast, we will meet up for departure to Laukvika and a full day’s hiking trip up the mighty Matmora – one of Lofoten’s pearls!
The trip to the top of Matmora, 788 metres above sea level, is an even climb almost all the way up.

If the weather is clear, you will get to experience possibly the best sunset you’ve ever seen. This experience, with the white beaches at Delp, the mountaintops all around, and the open turquoise sea, will certainly have an impact on you.

We’ll enjoy our picnic and the stunning surroundings before we head back down along the ridge with a constant, 360 degree, fantastic view. The last few kilometres down to the road are quite steep. Transport will be waiting to take us back to Skårungen. There might also be a stop at the legendary Rolf’s bar…

Late back to Skårungen! Dinner in the restaurant.

Day 5Cycling trip to Henningsvær, summit trip to Festvågtind, 541 metres above sea level

Straight after breakfast you’ll get on your bike and head to Henningsvær, a trip of around 18km. On the way, we’ll park the bikes and the trip will continue on foot all the way up to Festvågtind, 541 metres above sea level.

This can be a bit of a demanding trip, with some simple climbing. You’ll be rewarded at the top – a spectacular view over Henningsvær, Vestvågøy and Stamsund! Don’t forget your camera!

Returning to the bikes you’ll cycle the last few kilometres into Henningsvær for sightseeing in the town centre and a lovely lunch at the Fiskekrogen restaurant.
After lunch, you will cycle back to Skårungen again, at an easy pace. The plan is to be back by early afternoon.
You’ll have a little bit of time to yourself before we all meet up again for dinner.
