Lofoten and Vesterålen are magical during the winter. From January to March there are plenty of opportunities to experience the unique light in Lofoten – and hopefully the Northern Lights too. A winter fairytale in Norway!
We will stay at the lovely Skårungen, the Melbu Hotel and the Ringstad Resort, which are all perfect bases for our activities and provide comfortable accommodation. You will have a personal host and you’ll enjoy newly refurbished, cosy cabins/hotel rooms situated right on the waterfront. Here it’s all about good food and great experiences.
And we offer a range of great experiences every day. Perhaps you’d like to give yourself an extra challenge by doing a sea kayak trip, a fishing trip in the ocean, or by taking a hike on snow shoes to some of Northern Norway’s most amazing mountain peaks? You can end the day with a sauna, hot tub or jacuzzi with a view out over the sea.
Ice bathing is also possible nearby…
This trip is perfect for you if you enjoy active holidays full of new experiences. You don’t need to be in peak fitness, but you still like a challenge. If you’re reasonably fit, you’ll be able to do all the activities on the programme, and this time in a winter wonderland.
Our day trips are run by professional and experienced local guides. We start each activity with a safety demonstration and a run through of the equipment. You will receive all the technical equipment you need on site. Please refer to your own equipment list further down the page.
The day trips take approx. 2-6 hours, so each day you will have a few hours to yourself before dinner.
You won’t find a better plan for an active holiday in Norway.
You can, of course, extend your trip and stay a few more days at your own expense, or shorten the trip if you prefer.
We have chosen a hotel in central Oslo so that you are within easy reach of the things you want to see.
You will be staying at Skårungen, in well-equipped, modern cabins and hotel rooms on the waterfront.

We can also recommend a number of good restaurants for lunch or dinner.
The journey continues to Northern Norway, first by airporttrain then by plane. Powerful scenery awaits!

Accommodation in cabins / hotel.
Perhaps you’ll have time for a quick walk around the area and a lovely dip in the hot tub before dinner…
Today we will be doing some Lofoten fishing. When you visit Lofoten, getting down to the sea and trying some fishing is a must.
After breakfast, you can take the bus into Svolvær, or hire a car if you prefer (transport not included). There you will board the MS Symra.
Fishing has always been a central part of Lofoten’s history and has greatly contributed, in many ways, to building our country. Rich Lofoten fishing, where the cod come from the Barents Sea to Lofoten to spawn, has been taking place for many hundreds of years, and has provided Norwegians with life-sustaining food all the way back to the Viking age. Fishing in Lofoten is heavily dependent on the season and time of year. And during the traditional Lofoten fishing season that lasts from the end of February until April, we catch cod. Our fishing trip includes deep sea fishing with a sea reel and/or deep sea fishing rod, and there’s coffee on board our authentic fishing boat.
The afternoon is free for you to do your own activities. Maybe you’d like to stay in Svolvær for some sightseeing and shopping. Or what about the Lofoten Aquarium, or the Lofoten Cathedral in Kabelvåg (not included)?
We end the day with a lovely dinner at Skårungen. Maybe you’ll get to see the Northern Lights from the hot tub?
Now it’s time for a new destination, and the trip goes on to Hadseløya in Vesterålen. If you have a car (not included), you’ll have time for a trip out to Henningsvær before taking the ferry over to Vesterålen.
Henningsvær is a fishing village steeped in history. Here you will find art galleries, lovely cafés and even a football pitch situated right at the mouth of the sea. If you’re up for a challenge, you can go up to a mountain top in Henningsvær where the views are stunning, (it should be snow-free if you’re going up).
The tour continues, either by car or bus (not included), to the ferry that takes you over to Melbu (not included). Straight from the pier, you go directly over to Melbu hotel, a simple hotel for keen hikers. There is a 3D map that shows you where the trips go, and with dedicated personal tour guides this is bound to be an unforgettable experience.
After dinner, you will be picked up and taken to this evening’s destination. You’ll be hunting for the Northern Lights! We will check the conditions carefully in advance to find the best places to look for the Northern Lights. Take a cup of cocoa and enjoy the scenery while you search for the lights. If you are interested in photography, we can advise on night-time and Northern Lights photography. Take some good warm clothes. Be prepared to take this trip on a different day – the weather conditions are a decisive factor.
After a good breakfast, there will be a short briefing and run through of equipment (snow shoes) at reception.
Vesterålen has plenty of lovely routes with breathtaking views from fjord to mountain. Today you will meet our local tour guide who will take you to some amazing places. To create the best experiences, we will set our goals for the trip the night before – changes in the weather, landslides and mountain conditions mean that it’s best to be flexible about where the trip will go. These trips take approximately 3-5 hours.
Winter in the north is something you must experience – the weather can change from hour to hour. We create magical experiences, whether there are snow drifts, high winds or if the sun shining in a clear blue sky. With these experiences you quickly understand why Lofoten and Vesterålen are world famous for the their experiences in nature.
Well-deserved dinner in Melbu.
After an early breakfast, you will be picked up at the hotel and driven to Bø i Vesterålen. Today you can experience winter kayaking (not included) in some fantastic scenery, or maybe you’d like to go on a sea eagle safari (not included)?
You’ll be right beside the ocean at the same time as enjoying the view of the snow-covered mountains. There’s a good chance you’ll spot the king of the sea – the eagle.
The kayak trip does not require any previous experience, you’ll receive good instruction from our guides. During the trip, we’ll stop at one of the beautiful beaches. If you’d rather get close to the sea eagles and not have to paddle yourself, you can also take the eagle safari by boat. You can choose before we leave. None of these two trips are included.
After the trip, you can take a well-deserved jacuzzi (not included) before dinner at the hotel’s restaurant. You will be served delicious dishes made with local ingredients. If the weather is good, you can take a walk out to the pier. Maybe you’ll see the Northern Lights?
After a good breakfast, there will be a short briefing with a run through of today’s trip. Today you can choose between a whale safari, sea eagle safari, kayaking or walking (not included). There are plenty of fantastic opportunities. Whatever you choose, it will be an amazing experience in some powerful scenery.
Trips with breathtaking views, or white beaches. Our local guides will take you to some magical places. To ensure the best experiences, we will set our goals for the trip the night before – in case of changes in conditions it’s better to be flexible.
