Cycling4Justice
The Journey

C4G in partnership with Ajyal Foundation for Education

Cycling4Justice will be our biggest event yet in light of the ongoing war on Gaza. This year we aim to mobilise 100 cyclists for a 4-day cycle of 300km starting in Ghent, Belgium and making a stop at the EU Parliament in Brussels, before finishing the cycle at the ICJ in the Hague.

August 21st – 26th 2024.

4 cycling days

300KM

We start from the charming medieval city of Ghent, cycle through Brussels and the beautiful countryside of Belgium to the Netherlands, passing through exciting historical cities all the way to the coast, through lush landscapes known for their cycling culture, and finishing at the International Court of Justice, The Hague.

A bit about the trip

The tour starts with arrival in Ghent on August 21st and ends in The Hague on August 26th. Depending on the number of participants, we will divide into smaller groups of approximately 15-25 cyclists per group to ensure safety. This is not a race. The aim is to come together to raise awareness and fundraise for the charity project (details on C4G website). The pace will be enjoyable, focusing on experiences, camaraderie, and most importantly, the purpose of the tour – to be in solidarity with the children in Gaza. Each group will have 2 tour guides. There will be four full days of cycling with lots of fun and exciting challenges, where the daily stages range from 80 to 110 km.

We will be staying in a different hotel every night (hotel and meal details below). Luggage will be transported along the way in our dedicated support vehicle, which will offer water refills and any assistance if needed. There are also a few spots available to ride in the support vehicles if energy levels run low.

What kind of cycling experience do I need to have?

You should anticipate daily distances of approximately 80 – 110 km. The route traverses relatively flat terrain with no major climbs. Expect to spend around 6 hours maximum on the saddle per day (excluding coffee and lunch breaks). In our experience, the best training includes being comfortable sitting on the saddle for longer periods. If you have prior experience riding a road bike, it will greatly help, although it’s not absolutely necessary.

Highlights
  • The midievel city center of Ghent
  • The picturesque landscapes, idyllic villages, and historical centers
  • All cycling paths and bike-friendly infrastructure
  • All the events and activities that will take place during the trip
  • The experience of moving together in solidarity with the people of Gaza

  • 24 of Aug in Rotterdam – Hotel NH Capelle (Barbizonlaan 2)

Bikes and equipment

All bikes are race bikes of high standard: full carbon racing bikes equipped with Shimano 105 / Ultegra components and disc brakes. All bikes come with repair kit.

The size of the bike is chosen based on the height provided upon registration. The bikes will be delivered on the day of arrival, where the Expa Travel crew will assist you with bike setup.

All bikes come with flat pedals (not clip-on). If you wish to use clip-on pedals and cycling shoes, it’s important to bring your own pedals (and shoes!). Note: Forgotten clip-on pedals will not be returned.

Remember to bring your own helmet, drink bottles and pedals/cycling shoe if you like to bike with bike shoes (full itemized list below).

Bike insurance

You can purchase insurance upon registration through C4G for possible damages to the bike. The insurance costs Euro 50 and covers damages up to Euro 300. The insurance does NOT cover theft.

Insurance can only be arranged upon registration and not on-site upon arrival. Without insurance, you must cover any damages yourself before departure.

Programme

Day 1Arrival day in Ghent

Meet up at Hotel Falder between 2:00 PM and 7:00 PM. Report your arrival to the C4G / Expa Travels reception desk for registration. The afternoon will be spent testing and adjusting your bike and splitting you into your cycling groups.
Welcome meeting with briefing about the event during the dinner at 7:30 PM in the hotel restaurant.

Day 2Bike stage Ghent to the City of Brussels / Approx 80 Km

An exciting day awaits. After a good breakfast, we are ready to cycle at 9:00 AM. The route from Ghent to the City of Brussels offers a captivating journey through Belgium’s countryside. We will pedal through picturesque landscapes, passing through charming villages and iconic windmills.

As we approach Brussels, the route transitions to urban surroundings, with glimpses of suburban life. We plan to make several short stops along the way for coffee, ice cream, and a light lunch. We expect to arrive at the European Parliament in Brussels around 4-5 PM. Here we gather all groups for a joint event at the parliament. We can expect a fair amount of traffic as we approach the parliament and our hotel in the center of Brussels.
Check-in and a pleasant dinner at the hotel restaurant at 8:00 PM. Briefing for the next cycling day will take place during dinner.

Day 3Bike stage Brussels - Turnhout / Approx 95 Km

We set off at 9:00 AM after a good breakfast. The route from Brussels to Turnhout covers around 95 km, winding through diverse landscapes. Beginning in Brussels, we navigate urban areas before entering peaceful countryside marked by rolling hills and quaint villages. As we pedal through picturesque scenery, we encounter rivers, forests, and farmland. Approaching Turnhout, the route transitions to suburban surroundings, culminating in the town’s welcoming atmosphere and cultural sights.
As with every cycling day, we stop at pleasant spots for a snacks and lunch. The dinner and evening activity will start at 8:00 PM.

Day 4Bike stage Turnhout - Rotterdam / Approx 110 km

A long and exciting day ahead. The route from Turnhout to Rotterdam spans about 110 km, traversing scenic Dutch and Belgian landscapes. Starting from Turnhout, we will pedal through picturesque countryside, passing by charming villages and historic windmills. As we approach Rotterdam, the surroundings become more urban, with views of the city’s modern architecture and vibrant waterfront. Upon arrival in Rotterdam, we experience the city’s dynamic atmosphere and iconic landmarks, concluding the stage on a rewarding note. Rotterdam is quite a big city so even if riding on bikepaths we can expect some traffic when getting closer to the city.
This day is the longest cycling day of all. Therefore, we will start a bit earlier, at 8:30 AM, to allow plenty of time to both enjoy the ride and our obligatory coffee stops and a good lunch.
Dinner/evening activity starting at 8 PM.

Day 5Bike stage Rotterdam - Haag / Approx 30 km

We will set off at 9 AM. The route from Rotterdam to the International Court of Justice in The Hague is relatively straightforward. We begin in Rotterdam, navigating through urban areas before transitioning into more suburban and residential surroundings. Along the route, we may pass by iconic landmarks such as the Erasmus Bridge and the Delfshaven district. As we approach The Hague, the scenery may become greener, with parks and tree-lined avenues. The route concludes at the International Court of Justice.
This will be the shortest cycling day of the trip, as we anticipate arriving at the International Court of Justice around 1:00 PM. The final part of the journey will culminate in a gathering of the entire group for a shared event and celebration.
Gathering for the closing dinner at 8:00 PM.
